There are definite signs of spring about at Mortimer & Bennett at the moment. We’re selling fewer pots of goose fat, and there’s a distinct increase in orders for our gold and silver chocolate buttons - a sure sign that someone is planning their wedding.
A couple of new products to tell you about this month. Macelleria Falorni is an institution in Tuscany – a charcuterie that brings people out of the cities of Siena and Florence to the small town of Greve in Chianti for the quality of its cured meats and salamis. I first discovered the shop when I was on holiday, driving around Tuscany. When I saw the shop, I stopped the car in the middle of the road, leaving my wife to park it, and ran in and did a deal with them on the spot. I was their first overseas customer, and I’ve been going back ever since. Their salamis are the best I’ve tasted, and they specialise in using meat from rare breeds, like Siena white-belted pig and Chianino cattle. We’ve stocked their salamis in our shop for years, and now we’ve worked out a way to pack them for mail order we can share them with you all. We hope you’re happy.
We’ve also just discovered some wonderful jellied sweets from Italy, flavoured with flower petals. They come in a beautifully decorated spring-like box, and they contain no artificial colourings or preservatives. Do we need to tell you they’re delicious, too? They’re going to make a great Easter treat, so why not get in there early?
Finally, you’ll notice a whole new section on the website, called ‘storecupboard essentials’. This is where you’ll find all the basics, like polenta flour and vanilla pods, that you ought to be able to find anywhere, but often can’t. They may not be the headline grabbers on our website, but they’re the basics that make the rest of them shine. Shoppers at our London shop have been enjoying these products for years, so we thought we should let you have the opportunity to enjoy them too. Happy browsing.
